Was machst du?

Momentan arbeite ich mit Jugendlichen zusammen - also den «new kids from the blox» und muss oder darf mir dadurch die momentan angesagtesten Trap-Tunes anhören (z.B. Jeremih - All the time).

The Cure - Boys don`t cry

Welches sind deine momentanen Lieblingssongs?

The Delta Rythm Boys - Work Song
Henry Strogin - Old folks boogie while the young ones twist
Bobby Wall - Baby It's Too Much
Lew Conetta - You Got Me Crazy
Lians Thelwell & The Celestials - Grazing in the Grass
Marva Josie - Later for your baby
The Kingstonians - I make a woman
Ebo Taylor & The Sweet Beans - Odofo Nyi Akyiri Biara
Principe Y Su Sexteto - Salsa De Guaguanco
The Wheel-a-ways - Bad Little Woman
Painted Faces - I lost you in my mind
Mile me deaf - Brando

Was isst & trinkst du am liebsten?

What's your name & where are you from?

Soul Koffi from Lausanne, Switzerland. Actually I am half swiss, half ghanaian.

What are you doing?

I'm dj, event promoter and programmer for two festivals, the Holy Groove
that I founded with 8 friends, and the Jazz Onze+. I am also social worker.

Who influenced you musically?

In Soul-Funk music James Brown has been my first influence

and Fela Kuti for Afro Beat.
But I also love jazz music, Horace Silver, Donald Byrd and Joe Henderson are my favorite jazzmen.

What was your first record?

The compilation ¨Strut'n'Get up¨ by Blue Note.

What are your favorite records at the moment?

¨Combinaison¨ by Les Loups Noirs d'Haïti, from 1978.

What's your best digging story?

I bought my first record the 11th of September 2001... I was digging in the records shop when somebody arrived and screamed

¨A plane crashed in one of the twin tours of Manhattan !¨
So I never forgot the day of my first dig.

What's your favorite format? LP, 12", 7"?

LP till today, but 7" starts to make concurrence.

What are your 10 alltime favorites?

So difficult...I prefer to mix the favorite songs and the favorite albums...

JAMES BROWN ¨Mind Power¨
JOE HARRIOT AND AMANCIO D'SILVA QUARTET ¨Hum Dono¨
SONNY CRISS QUARTET featuring Wynton Kelly : the album with the same name
HORACE SILVER the album ¨Song for my father¨
BILL EVANS ¨Peace Piece¨
RODGER COLLINS ¨Foxy little girl in Oackland¨
PRINCEZITO ¨Storia d'Amor em Tempo di Guerra¨
OXMO PUCCINO ¨Opéra Puccino¨
K.FRIMPONG & HIS CUBANO FIESTAS : the black and the blue albums
GNONNAS PEDRO ET SES DADJES ¨La musica en vérité¨

What's your most memorable dj gig?

It was at the Cully Jazz Festival in 2013 with Dj Format for a Koffi & The Gang party.
The venue called Next Step was full and I could spin all my favorite
Afro Beat and Afro Funk records.
People were so reactive. Dj Format was, as usual, incredible !

What's the best concert you ever went to?

I don't know if it is the best concert but for sure it is the most amazing show I've ever seen in
my short life. Michael Jackson in 1992 at La Pontaise in Lausanne, when he was touring
to present the album ¨Dangerous¨. There was almost 50'000 people, and during all the show the security guys had to transport the people too close from the scene to the emergency exit because they were all fainting...even before the show had started...

Where & with who would your dream gig be?

I think London is the most attractive City for a Soul-Funk Dj.

But as I am half ghanaian, I'd love to make a gig in Accra too.
There is a lot of djs I'd like to mix with,
but most attractive to me is to be the dj for the after show
or the warm up of several bands.

What's your favorite food & drink?

Traditional african meat balls I cook at home, with plantains and sweet potatoes.
I don't eat dessert, but a glass of whiskey is always welcomed.

Any words of advice?

Take care of your Soul...
